As my good friend Tony said, everyone is blogging about the new Apple iPad and in order to add only a minimum of extra waffle, you should read his comments on at his Perception is Truth Blog. I agree pretty well with everything Tony has said there.

And then I read today’s Joy of Technology comic which I found very funny but I was already thinking about when would be the right time to buy an iPad.

Historically, I have been an early adopter of new technology and Apple makes particularly sexy technology which is very hard to resist. Resistance is aided by the fact that Apple technology is often more expensive than other manufacturers, that said, I do think that Apple equipment is good value for money if you really think it through. However, when it comes to Apple I am no longer an early adopter. I bought a Graphite iMac in 2000, you know the ones that looked like a portable TV, it was great to use but in the end it became redundant because I needed a Windows computer more and it was superceded so quickly.

Since then, I have been much more cautious when it comes to buying Apple stuff. I didn’t get an iPod until 4th Generation, I didn’t get an iPod Touch until 3rd Generation and I have not got an iPhone mainly because I already have a work provided phone and a private phone which is a Blackberry which frankly I enjoy more for phone, tweeting, texting, etc. My main computer is now a MacBook and I love it.

My guess is that the new first generation iPad will be good, but I will wait until the second or third generation at least before I get one (which I am certain I will do). If you look at how much better spec the 3rd Gen Touch is compared to the 1st Gen, similarly the improvements made to the iPhone – then that is why.

It does seem to me that Apple have a tendency to bring new products to market as soon as they have something that is “good” rather than something that is “great”. I wonder if this is deeply embedded in their culture having missed the mass microcomputer market to the PC in the early 80s.

Of course, if I win the lottery this weekend and money becomes no object then I’ll get 3 or 4 of the 1st Gen iPads anyway …. haha !!!

I am torn between the urge to get one now and the same feeling that the 2011 iPad will have those little extra things I would miss (mainly flash support).

Still, my current laptop is that old it’s more or less useless and no matter how good Opera is on my phone it would be good to be able to have something around the house that can browse the web etc, and something I can take on the train or to the park that has a more useable screen. And at $499 (£300 plus tax) that’s the same price as a netbook and a lot more useful for the basic stuff.

    We shall see come March.
